Actively Organic at Greensmith Grocers

Deb Caruso discovers the secret ingredients to being more than your friendly neighbourhood grocers.

Greensmith Grocers isn’t your average grocery store. Step inside and you’ll see it straight away: shelves filled with products chosen with extraordinary care; and a team that listens as intently to its customers as it does to its makers. What sets Greensmith apart is its mission to deliver more than groceries – it delivers discovery. Each product has been carefully curated to not only meet demand but to excite, educate and inspire.

“We’re here to bring the best quality, unique ingredients to our community, and if something is missing or if there is a way to do it better, we’ll work with our suppliers to bring it to market,” Greensmith Grocers co-owner Jess Holdsworth said. “It’s not about being the biggest, it’s about being the most trusted for quality, innovation and value.”

That approach plays out in dozens of ways. Customers might request a hard-to-find flour, a new kind of healthy snack, or an alternative to everyday condiments. Rather than say no, the Greensmith team goes searching. If the product exists, they’ll track it down and bring it in. If it doesn’t, they’ll work to make it happen. That could mean guiding makers through basics like labelling, barcoding or pricing; or helping growers refine their process so they can bring their work to more people.

The result? Shelves that are always surprising, always inspiring. One week it might be the introduction of the worlds-first freeze-dried goat feta from Little White Goat Cheese; another week it’s securing the country’s only supply of einkorn flour, the original ancient grain prized by bakers for its high protein, low gluten content and rich nutty flavour.

These are products you won’t stumble across at your average grocer – and that’s the point. Listening and acting is hardwired into Greensmith’s culture with staff and customers encouraged to share requests for emerging or hard-to-find products.

“We’ve always seen our role as providing solutions for people who want real food,” Jess explains. “Whether that’s convenience with clean ingredients or finding the healthiest alternative to everyday staples.”

That attitude sparked the development of their own Quick Stix Mix recipe bases – organic spice blends created after recognising how many families wanted to cook healthy meals quickly, without juggling a dozen pantry items.

Being fast and flexible means Greensmith can respond quickly to deliver what people want. For example, when regular rice with bone broth hit mainstream shelves, Greensmith responded by producing a superior organic version in partnership with a local bone broth company – created, tested and ready in just two months.

It’s this responsiveness that keeps customers returning. In Greensmith, they find not just ingredients but trust, built on the knowledge that someone has done the research, checked the quality, and chosen products with care.

The store’s seasonal Market Nights reinforce this connection. Customers meet the very people behind the labels, hear their stories, and taste the difference directly; producers become part of a living food community.

And while food is the hero, health and wellness are integral too with a range of hand-selected health and beauty products plus three community naturopaths who offer free expert guidance, practical advice and insights for customers.

Among the newest products lining the shelves are proof of their curatorial magic. Wild Mother’s Aged Apple Cider Vinegar and Black Cherry Vinegar – vibrant flavour bombs that elevate humble salads; The Carob Kitchen’s Organic Carob Syrup, offering a caffeine-free twist on chocolate indulgence; Happy Farmer’s Enzyme Plum Concentrate, brimming with probiotic goodness for gut health; Apollo’s Mushroom Gummies, fun functional bites made from medicinal mushrooms; and Zee’s Paprika Oil, smoky, versatile and nothing short of addictive in roasts and marinades.

Each one tells a bigger story about Greensmith’s unique role as a conduit between maker and customer.

“We know people are busy, but they still want to eat well,” Jess says. “We take away the hard work of researching, sourcing and testing products by doing that for them. We only put things on our shelves that we love ourselves.”

After four years of growth, Greensmith has carved out a niche not just as a grocer, but as a champion of smaller producers, by listening and innovating, they’ve created something more powerful than a shopping destination. They’ve created a food community rooted in quality, trust and joy.

“Sometimes the best things in your fridge are the ones you haven’t met yet,” Jess says.
