With more people taking the plunge with texture and pattern, it’s an exciting time in the world of bathroom design. Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer taps into some of the trends for 2024 and beyond.

The reign of the all-white bathroom is officially over – if you’re looking to bring your bathroom up-to-date, it’s time to embrace texture and pattern, creating a tactile haven that’s just oozing luxury.

We chatted to style guru Crystal Bylett of Coolum-based store Sunshine Living Tile & Stone about some of the trends she’s been seeing recently and how to incorporate them into your own space…

Island Vibes

Tropical outdoor bathrooms are having a serious moment, with stone cladding, island pebbles and stone mosaics adding a luxe element to any bathroom.

“Think Bali, think palm trees, think stunning island vibes!” exclaims Crystal. “Walls in stone cladding are being used as privacy dividers instead of shower screens; bathrooms that can open up to the outside are popular, or if not, skylights are a must. White pebbles and stone mosaic floors are adding texture and interest, while stone baths and basins are having a big resurgence.”

Check Mate

Retro checks and stripes in bold tones are here to stay, with warm rusty red and vintage brown tones bringing the 70s and 80s style.

“These retro colours and styles are being paired with beautiful textured white bricks to create unique concepts that we haven’t seen for a long while,” says Crystal. “It’s an exciting time to be designing bathrooms.”

Living Large

Subway tiles continue to have their moment in the sun (or should that be heat lamp?), but people are also increasingly turning to large-format tiles in a variety of finishes.

“We are seeing lots of big beauties in the form of 1200x600mm porcelain tiles with interesting textures such as linea, rendered, and rockface finishes,” Crystal says. “They are great for bathroom feature walls and kitchen splashbacks, and, as an added bonus, they also save on installation costs and create minimal grout joints.”

Keep it Classic

Classic designs are ever-popular for a reason, and the tile combination that transcends the trends and works in any home is the striking octagon-dot pattern.

“The classic design of octagon and dot is perfect for adding into bathroom floors and laundry areas to create that old-world charm,” Crystal says. “It’s a look that will never date.”

Tap into Chrome and Antique Glass

When it comes to tapware, brushed chrome and antique brass are emerging as new favourites in bathroom design.

“These finishes bring a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space, adding a modern twist to the overall aesthetic,” Crystal says. “Both options are versatile, allowing homeowners to effortlessly incorporate them into various bathroom styles, from minimalist to eclectic.”

Your blissful bathroom awaits!
