Driving People, Not Just Cars at Ken Mills Toyota

John Caruso learns how buying a car has been reimagined. A place where people and purpose come first with a team blending care, culture, and genuine connection.

When you walk into Ken Mills Toyota, whether it’s Nambour or Maroochydore, you’re not just walking into a dealership. You’re stepping into a culture built around people. It’s a point that dealer principal Brett Mills has made often: buying a car should be easy and straightforward.

“We want to take the stress out of the process,” Brett told Hello Sunshine Magazine, “so our customers walk away confident, not confused.”

That philosophy is alive on the ground in Maroochydore, where branch manager Blake Noffke leads the team. His title is a modest one, but the responsibility is broad.

“Think of each dealership as its own business,” Blake says. “You’ve got sales, service, finance, technicians, advisors, it’s a full ecosystem.

“My job is to make sure that all of those moving parts are aligned, and more importantly, that the customer feels it works for them.”

Blake’s own path to leadership didn’t begin on the showroom floor. He came from the numbers side of the business, an accountant by training, he started out with Toyota in Melbourne, then moved north just before COVID turned life on its head. He’s worked in finance and corporate reporting, but, as he admits, “Corporations don’t do it for me.

“Here, when someone picks up their new car and you see the joy on their face,” he says. “You don’t get that from an annual report.”

It’s that shift from spreadsheets to people that drives him now. He says the dealership was a melting pot of personalities, confident salespeople, analytical technicians, apprentices finding their way, and service advisors who often face customers on their toughest days.

“It’s challenging, but it’s also rewarding,” Blake says. “What I love is that you’re not just influencing a line on a balance sheet. You’re making someone’s day easier.”

Blake’s grounding in people skills goes back further than the dealership. As a junior golfer, his father had a rule, Blake and his two brothers were never allowed to play together.

“Dad would put us in with strangers every Saturday,” he recalls. “By the end of 18 holes, you had to know what they did for work, about their families, the lot. It was his way of making sure we learned how to talk to people.”

Today, all four brothers work in customer-facing roles, a legacy, Blake says, of those early fairways.

Inside Ken Mills Toyota, culture matters as much as cars. That, Blake insists, comes directly from Brett.

“I’ve worked in big corporations where you’re just a number,” he says. “Not here. Brett’s approach is solutions focused. If something goes wrong, it’s not about blame, it’s about how we fix it and making sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Training is a cornerstone of that approach. Staff at Ken Mills Toyota have undertaken programs from the Disney Institute in Los Angeles, learning how one of the world’s most recognised brands has built a reputation on customer experience.

“What stuck with us is the idea of service recovery,” Blake explains. “Things go wrong sometimes, that’s life. What matters is how you respond, how you turn it around, so the customer feels valued. That’s the difference.”

The dealership’s ‘family feel’ is something Brett and his team are determined to hold onto, even as the business grows, it’s a thread that runs through everything.

“It’s about being the number one choice for locals,” Blake says. “We want people to think of us when they’re buying their first car, upgrading to fit a growing family, or servicing a trusted vehicle they’ve had for years.”

Looking ahead, the focus is on keeping that promise. Toyota’s next generation of vehicles will meet new emissions standards, and Ken Mills Toyota wants to be at the forefront, offering options that fit seamlessly into customers’ lives.

“Everybody’s time is stretched,” Blake says. “That’s why we introduced night servicing where you can drop your car off in the evening and pick it up in the morning.”

For Blake personally, the role he holds now is something of a dream realised.

“I’ve wanted this for years,” he says. “It’s not an easy jump to make from financial controller to leading a dealership. But Brett and the team backed me, and I’m grateful for that.

“Now my goal is to keep building on what’s here, to make sure that when people think Toyota on the Sunshine Coast, they think of us.”

From the outside, a dealership might just look like a place to buy and service cars. But spend time with Blake Noffke and his team and you see the bigger picture, a business built on culture, trust, and people.

The cars are important, but at Ken Mills Toyota, they’re not the only thing driving the business.
