Fun, Friendly & Fabulously Creative with Noosa Open Studios
John Caruso discovers a kaleidoscope of creativity as artists and galleries throw open the studio doors for the biggest, boldest Noosa Open Studios event yet. Start your engines, you’re in for a visual feast.
Nothing says ‘spring’ on the Sunshine Coast quite like the annual migration of art lovers and the creatively curious, all dutifully studying the Noosa Open Studios Art Trail Guide to plan their adventure. Whether you’re in Caloundra, Maroochydore, the hinterland or Gympie way, this is the time to make the trip north and discover the creative heart of Noosa.
This year’s 10th birthday promises to be the biggest ever, with 94 artists (ranging from internationally recognised names to fresh emerging talent) and galleries flinging open their doors from 10-19 October and inviting you to peek, ponder and perhaps even purchase an original masterpiece straight from the source.
Wallace House remains the home base for maps, artist info and enthusiastic local volunteers who’ll happily point you toward a hidden studio. Or at least the best spot for high-end Noosa coffee and homemade goodies before you hit the trail again. From wall-sized abstracts to whimsical sculptures, pastels, oils, textiles, ceramics and glassblowing – every studio is a window into Noosa’s creative soul.
Many artists are lifelong locals drawing inspiration from the Noosa landscape, while others have travelled the world before settling here to create. These are local artists who love to chat about their work and often share their favourite Sunshine Coast haunts too – and that’s what makes events like these so special.
Noosa Open Studios isn’t just about seeing finished works. It’s about connecting with the makers themselves. Artists will often share their process, show works-in-progress and chat about what inspires them. It’s an intimate and authentic way to experience art, far removed from the white walls of a traditional gallery.
You might start the trail saying “just looking,” but don’t be surprised if you fall in love with a piece. From affordable sketches and handmade ceramics to large-scale statement paintings, there’s something for every budget and home. It’s a chance to invest in original art and carry a little piece of Noosa’s creative spirit back with you.
This tenth anniversary trail offers four curated routes covering classic coastal hotspots, hinterland hideaways, lakeside studios and the ever-alluring central Noosa zone. No matter where you’re starting from on the Coast, it’s worth the drive. You’ll stumble across something extraordinary.
And there’s more reason than ever to make a weekend of it. This year, Noosa Open Studios joins forces with Sunshine Coast Open House (also running 10-19 October), where you can step inside outstanding homes, gardens, walking tours and workshops.
Art and architecture, side by side, celebrating the creative spirit of our whole region. One weekend, double the inspiration!
Add in a hands-on workshop program with 15 classes to try your hand at a new skill and you’ve got every excuse hit the road and make a Sunshine Coast art pilgrimage.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, the workshops are designed to inspire and send you home with a creation of your own.
So, dust off your walking shoes, rally your pals and join the artistic adventure.
Wherever you call home on the Coast, this is your invitation to come to Noosa and see what all the creative buzz is about.
