Gold Stories at Gold Buyers National
Gold has long held meaning for Helen Walker, making this a story she was eager to tell.
There’s something about gold that I’ve always connected with – I feel unfinished without a piece of jewellery and for me, gold carries both beauty and a quiet sense of history.
Maybe it’s the way a tiny pendant can hold decades of memories, or how a simple chain can remind you of someone you loved, or a moment you lived. So when I sat down with Tanya McDonough from Gold Buyers National, I felt instantly at home. She speaks about gold the way I feel about it – not just as a precious metal, but as something that carries stories. And as it turns out, her own story is woven with gold too.
Tanya tells me that Gold Buyers National began in 2014, after she and her husband Scott relocated their family to the Sunshine Coast. They’d spent years working for a global gold buying company, but the move north sparked something new – a chance to build something of their own.
“We opened our first store at Kawana Shoppingworld in 2017,” Tanya tells me, smiling as she remembers those early days. It was the moment their family business truly began – it was a new chapter in a new town, built on courage, hard work and a willingness to back themselves.
Two people, a young family, a fresh start on the Sunshine Coast. There’s something beautifully local about that kind of leap – the mix of optimism, grit and community spirit that seems to thrive here.
From that single Kawana store, Gold Buyers National has grown steadily. Sunshine Plaza followed in 2019, then Robina Town Centre in 2020, and today they have a close knit team of 14. Despite the expansion, Tanya says the heart of the business hasn’t changed.
“We’re still very hands on with the day to day operation,” she explains. “Our philosophy has always been to provide
a professional, friendly and convenient service to our local communities.”
And you can hear that philosophy in the way she speaks – warm, grounded and genuine. There’s no corporate polish, no rehearsed lines. Just a woman who genuinely cares about the people who walk through her doors.
Nearly ten years on, Gold Buyers National has become a well known family business with a loyal base of repeat customers and a steady flow of new ones through word of mouth. That kind of growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when people trust you and when they feel seen, respected and welcomed.
One of the things I love most about gold is how it sits quietly in our lives. A broken chain tucked in a drawer. A single earring whose partner disappeared years ago. A ring we once adored but no longer worn. Tanya sees these forgotten treasures every day and she sees the potential in them.
“There’s definitely been a shift towards turning clutter into cash,” she explains. “Selling old broken chains, single earrings and other jewellery you can no longer wear is a great way for people to make use of things that would otherwise just sit in a drawer.”
And with gold prices so high, people are often stunned by what their forgotten pieces are worth.
“Many customers are blown away – not only by how much they receive, but also by the friendly and easy experience they have with our team.”
I can imagine that moment – someone handing over a tiny, tangled chain, expecting next to nothing and walking away with enough money to make a real difference. It’s a kind of magic. I ask Tanya what surprises customers most when they sell their gold.
“A lot of customers are genuinely surprised by how much they’re offered,” she says. “Many are also pleasantly surprised by the experience itself. They get to watch the process as we test and value their pieces.”
As someone who loves seeing how things work, I can imagine myself leaning over the counter, fascinated by the testing process, watching gold reveal its secrets. Tanya is passionate about the role gold recycling plays in reducing the environmental impact of mining.
“By recycling old gold and refining it back into pure gold bullion, we’re able to put that gold back into the economy without the need for additional mining,” she explains. “It’s a great way to give something old a new purpose.”
I love this idea – that something once loved, then forgotten, can be reborn. It’s sentimental, yes, but also practical and deeply sustainable. Old jewellery doesn’t have to stay old.
“Broken pieces can be refined back into pure gold,” Tanya says. “That gold can then be used again in many different ways, whether it’s made into beautiful new jewellery or kept as bullion bars.”
There’s something poetic about that, the idea that gold never really dies. It simply transforms and this is where Tanya’s gentle nature shines.
“Sometimes a customer brings in something sentimental and they’re unsure,” she says. “We suggest they take it home and think about it. There’s absolutely no obligation to sell.”
As a sentimental person, I appreciate this – gold holds memories that deserve respect. For those who do decide to sell, Tanya often suggests removing any stones and keeping them as a way to hold onto part of the original piece.
“There are so many memorable moments,” she says. “We’ve had customers cry with happiness.
She tells me about a woman who brought in some old chains and walked away with around $800.
“She cried and said, ‘You don’t know what this means to me. Thank you so much. I honestly thought I would be quoted $50.’”
It’s moments like that, the unexpected joy, the relief, the gratitude, that make this business more than a transaction.
“We’re a family business that genuinely cares about our customers,” she says. “We love being able to provide a friendly, trustworthy service while also giving people access to some extra cash when they need it.”
And after spending time with her, I believe every word. Gold Buyers National isn’t just about gold. It’s about people, stories, memories, and new directions. And for someone like me who sees gold as more than metal – that feels like the perfect fit.
