Happy Birthday Moreton at The Ginger Factory
Move over Thomas, there’s another train celebrating a milestone birthday and everyone is invited to the party. Jodie Cameron joins in the fun with a big hip hip hooray!
A visit to the Sunshine Coast isn’t complete without a stop at The Ginger Factory. For generations, families have made their way through its gates drawn by the scent of ginger treats, the charm of the gardens, and of course, the unforgettable experience of climbing aboard Moreton, the much-loved Ginger Train. For many, it’s a tradition passed down through the years; for others, it’s the beginning of a brand-new memory. But Moreton is more than just a train ride, he’s a piece of Queensland’s living history.
Built in 1901 by Locomotivfabrik Krauss & Co in Munich, Germany, Moreton began his journey on the other side of the world. Just a few years later, in 1905, he made the long voyage to Australia, where he was purchased by the Moreton Central Mill in Nambour. As the mill’s very first steam locomotive, Moreton quickly became a hardworking part of the region’s thriving sugar industry, hauling heavy loads of sugar cane through the fields day after day. For decades, he played an essential role in keeping the industry moving reliable, resilient, and steadfast in his duty. Moreton continued to serve faithfully until the end of the 1968 crushing season, when he was officially retired from active service.
Even then, his story wasn’t quite finished; he remained on standby, a trusted backup should the mill’s newer diesel engines falter. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that Moreton’s next chapter truly began. Carefully restored with great care and craftsmanship, he was given new life and a new purpose. Today, at the Ginger Factory Moreton delights in carrying passengers through the gardens and around the grounds. And as he celebrates his milestone birthday on 26 August 2026, one thing is certain, Moreton isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
The iconic Ginger Factory is an agri-tourism destination like no other, offering free entry and welcoming visitors seven days a week, making it an easy addition to any Sunshine Coast itinerary. Set amongst lush tropical gardens, the park invites guests to slow down and explore at their own pace. Wander along winding rainforest walks, browse the charming boutique stores, or settle in for a relaxed meal at The Ginger Kitchen.
For something sweet, a stop at Gingerlatis is a must, where the handcrafted gelato provides the perfect treat. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to relive a favourite experience, there’s always something new to discover. The story of Buderim Ginger and The Ginger Factory is pure Queensland, shaped by chance, resilience, and a handful of determined farmers. What began in the early 1900s as a few pieces of ginger planted in Buderim’s rich volcanic soil quietly grew into something far greater.
Everything changed during the Second World War, when imported ginger supplies were cut off and five local farmers came together in 1941 to form the Buderim Ginger Growers Co-operative. Working from an abandoned blacksmiths cottage, they began processing ginger commercially, creating what would become their signature product crystallised ginger and laying the foundations for an enduring local industry.
As the business grew, so too did its story. By 1979, a new factory had opened in Yandina to support increasing demand and welcome curious visitors, evolving into the vibrant destination we know today. It was here, in 1983, that Prince Charles and Princess Diana famously toured the site – just one moment in a long history that continues to unfold.
Today, that history isn’t just told, it’s experienced. Visitors can step beyond the gardens and into the story itself through the Taste of Ginger Tour, a behind-the-scenes journey that brings the process to life, from raw rhizome to finished treat. It’s a chance to see how tradition, innovation, and craftsmanship come together offering a deeper appreciation of an industry that has shaped the region.
That sense of discovery is everywhere. Turn a corner and suddenly you’re beneath the Rainbrella Project, hundreds of rainbow umbrellas suspended overhead in a vibrant canopy of colour. Created in collaboration with Sunshine Coast artist Sophy Blake, this public art installation is inspired by themes of hope and renewal.
“Walking beneath it brings great joy,” says Kim the Ginger Factory Marketing Manager “It’s easily the most Instagrammable spot in the park.”
Winding through these same gardens is the newly launched Native Tree Trail, a free, self-guided experience that invites visitors to slow down and take a closer look. Set along the Zog Trail, the walk showcases more than 75 native tree species, each marked with a numbered blue tag. With a simple checklist brochure in hand, it becomes part nature walk, part treasure hunt perfect for curious minds of all ages.
“It’s designed to help you slowdown in the best possible way,” Kim explains.
And there’s always something new to enjoy. These school holidays, guests can experience Fluffy Highland Cow Kisses and Colour Splash Face Painting, which are free activities that add another layer of fun to the day. With free entry to the park, it’s easy to settle in, grab a warm ginger scone, let the kids explore, and climb aboard Moreton the Ginger Train.
“We want families, grandparents and visitors to experience the magic of The Ginger Factory at their own pace,” Kim says. “There really is no place like it.”
