Jamie Marshall’s life reads like an adventure novel, filled with storms, lightning strikes, and a dash of British comedy. The new owner of Creative Tours brings a wealth of global experience and a unique perspective to the local tourism scene. Born in Holland to parents who ran bespoke tours on commercial cargo vessels, Jamie’s childhood was anything but ordinary.
“I was 15 years old, and I never knew what it was like to live in a house,” he recalls. “I didn’t know what electricity from a socket felt like, nor did we have a television.”
His parents were pioneers in running canal cruises in France introducing tourists to local winemakers, producers and chefs. This unconventional upbringing, however, provided him with a rich tapestry of experiences that would shape his future and he recalls running day trips for tourists – an early precursor to his future career. Perhaps the most amusing aspect of Jamie’s childhood was his method of learning English.
“We learned from watching VHS tapes of Fawlty Towers, Monty Python and British comedies,” he chuckles.
This explains his unusual accent, which often leads people to mistake him for South African or Kiwi. Jamie’s journey from cargo ships to Creative Tours is a testament to his adventurous spirit and resilience. He’s survived being struck by lightning twice, once directly through his body.
“Apparently, my heart stopped beating for a few minutes, I’m told somebody did a bit of CPR on me, and I came to, but I have no recollection of that time,” Jamie shares, with a nonchalance that belies the gravity of the situation.
His seafaring career has taken him through storms with winds up to 80 knots, experiences that would make even the hardiest sailor quake in their boots. One particularly harrowing journey near Sardinia was reminiscent of a scene from The Wolf of Wall Street.
“I was thinking this really could be it,” Jamie admits, recalling the six-to-seven-metre waves that battered their vessel.
Despite these near-death experiences, Jamie’s passion for the sea and tourism never wavered. He’s run tourism and sailing businesses in various locations, including a decade-long stint in Mallorca, Spain. His global odyssey eventually led him to Australia, thanks to a serendipitous phone call and a discerning Australian-born stewardess who picked his CV out of a pile of resumes.
“Long story short, I ended up marrying this person,” he says. “Two children later, and Carly and I decided that the Sunshine Coast was the best place in the world to live.”
Together, they developed a business running bespoke sailing tours which taught them a lot about developing premium products and the special touches that can elevate experiences. The adventurer offers a fresh perspective on Australian culture. He’s particularly impressed by the openness of spirit and sense of community he’s encountered.
“There’s a real sense of community amongst people,” he observes, citing the recent near-cyclone event as an example of Aussie resilience and camaraderie.
Jamie’s enthusiasm for his adopted home is palpable.
“I think the level of international skill and knowledge is some of the best in the world,” he declares. This high praise comes from a man who’s seen his fair share of the world’s most celebrated destinations.
