Can you keep a secret? Whether you love walking, kayaking, running or simply immersing yourself in the beauty of the hinterland, we know a place where you can do it all – and reward yourself with a delicious brunch afterwards! Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer visits Secrets on the Lake to discover all that’s on offer.

Picture the scene: you wake up super early, pull on your sneakers, and meet your bestie, beloved or a group of friends on the banks of the tranquil Lake Baroon, located between the quaint hinterland towns of Montville and Maleny.

The trees are alive with cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets and other bird life, and the lake ripples in the breeze as you start down the gentle track from Baroon Pocket Dam towards Baroon Lookout – passing through mixed open woodland and creeks fringed by palms and vine forests, before enjoying the 180-degree views over Obi Obi Gorge.

After two hours of wandering, laughing and connecting with nature and each other, you get back to the carpark feeling ravenous and in serious need of a coffee – but instead of having to drive to the nearby towns in search of sustenance, you simply stroll to the area’s best-kept secret: Secrets on the Lake!

This rainforest retreat’s beautiful cafe is a hidden gem, with waterfront views that’ll take your breath away and a fantastic menu to match.

Breakfast is served from 8am to 10.15am Tuesday to Sunday and lunch from 11am to 2.30pm daily, and the menu includes Moroccan Baked Eggs with chickpeas, capsicum and chilli; Smashed Avo with dukkah and lemon; Steak Sandwich; Chicken Burger; and the delightfully decadent Brioche Cinnamon Toast with vanilla gelato, chocolate ganache and fresh berries – the perfect reward after all that exercise!

You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to visit the cafe – everyone is welcome to dine – but once you’ve swooned over the towering treehouse cabins with their carved wooden features, panoramic views and luxurious spa baths, you’ll be determined to book yourself in for a future staycation.

After a big day exploring the beautiful gardens, verdant rainforest and lakeside walks on the property, guests can retreat to their cabin with a thoughtfully packed dinner hamper to BBQ on their deck, with a red wine in hand, as they gaze out at the view.

Each hamper is made to order to your preferences, and can include wine, garlic bread, salad, gourmet sausages, salmon and steak for the ultimate treetop feast.

If you’re longing to get out on the water, canoes, fishing rods and life-jackets are available for guests to use, and Lake Baroon is stocked with lots of fish, so you’re likely to get lucky!

Or for those seeking to stretch themselves, the nearby walk from Baroon Lookout to Kondalilla Falls is a relatively challenging three-hour hike through the lush rainforest and dense bushland of Kondalilla National Park, with the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the swimming hole at the falls on arrival!

The Secrets on the Lake team are happy to pick you up from Kondalilla Falls afterwards, and have a wealth of information about all there is to see and do in the area, so make sure you take advantage of their insider knowledge when planning your stay.

Next time you’re craving some time in the great outdoors with your favourite people – whether it’s a day trip or a night or two away from it all – Secrets on the Lake is sure to satisfy.

The secret’s officially out!

You’re welcome!
