Slow Food Fast at Greensmith Grocers

Get wholesome goodness delivered to your door. Jodie Cameron discovers how a local organic grocer is changing food habits, one Uber Eats at a time…

It’s 6pm, you’re tired and the kids are circling like sharks, and the path of least resistance is whatever gets food to your door fastest. But is there even such a thing as wholesome takeaway that isn’t fast food and full of who knows what? Slow food and fast delivery generally don’t belong in the same sentence as each other, but at Greensmith Grocers in Birtinya, your Uber Eats order can now be organic produce, bone broth rice, and absolutely zero seed oils. It’s not a wellness fantasy – it’s already on the menu.

There’s something almost rebellious about a wholefoods grocer going onto a platform built for burgers and pizza and listing a Wild Salmon Bowl with pickled ginger and carrot turmeric dressing. As a long-time pescatarian I couldn’t be more excited because co-owners Jess Holdsworth and Uwe Wullfen have made it happen – joining Uber Eats’ long list of fast food options. Except this time, the food is actually good for you.

Jess says the goal was always to offer something that stood apart, and didn’t just tick a box.

“We wanted to create a menu that appealed to everyone, so people could taste the difference between eating organic, without paying extra,” she says.

Everything on the Greensmith Grocers Uber Eats menu is certified organic, made with local meat, flavoured with herbs and spices from their own house brand Love My Earth, and the coffees – yes, you can order coffee – are made on Mount Beerwah spring water with organic beans. Even the hot chocolate is a house-made Spiced Cacao, they’re not cutting corners anywhere. The drinks menu is just as considered – take your pick from Iced Mochas, Happy Hippie bottled smoothies to go, Bobby Soft Drinks, Wild Organic Iced Teas and Isotonic Hydration and coconut water.

A few things set the Greensmith Grocers menu firmly apart from anything else you’ll scroll past, like no seed oils, refined sugar, or farmed fish – and for the coeliacs, everything is gluten free. The beef in the Bolognese is certified organic Beach Farm mince, slow-simmered with herbs, while the chicken is certified organic Queensland. And the salmon? Wild caught – these aren’t shortcuts, they’re simply a good cook’s instincts and bestsellers for a reason. For anyone who’s ever squinted at a delivery menu wondering exactly what’s in that sauce, you don’t need to worry when you order from Greensmith.

“The organic shopper knows what they want and will seek it out,” Jess says. “Once people try our bowls, they keep coming back because they know the quality and freshness they are receiving, whether they purchased it in-store or have it delivered.”

That appeal is spreading – the Uber Eaters tasting the power kraut in their Roast Chicken Bowl or quinoa salad, are showing up in-store wanting to buy the ingredients themselves. The delivery menu has become a gateway to conscious eating and a tasty tease for a whole different way of thinking about what goes in your trolley.

“Uber Eats has essentially become a front door to people who may never have walked into our store,” Jess says. “The more people eating local and organic the better. We’re all about sharing that love so everyone can afford healthy and nourishing food.”

Their delivery range now includes a range of frozen ready-made meals – also available in-store – using produce from the shop and flavours from the Love My Earth range. For the nights when even Uber Eats feels like too much effort, you can pull a Greensmith meal from your own freezer.

For anyone thinking organic is too expensive and fast food is still cheaper, think again. Greensmith’s bowls sit around the $20-$22 mark. That’s not far from what you’d pay for a standard bowl at plenty of mainstream delivery spots – except here, you’re getting certified organic chicken, wild-caught salmon, and a meal that was made with care rather than reheated mystery protein.

“Our pre-made organic bowls are no more expensive than other bowls on the market,” Jess says. “When you factor in what you’re getting, you’ll be surprised at the value you are receiving.”

If all of this wholesome eats talk has you wanting to experience Greensmith Grocers in person, the good news is Jess and Uwe are working toward opening the Greensmith Kitchen – a new kiosk located outside the Birtinya store. It’s been a labour of love so watch this space, it will be worth the wait. In the meantime, don’t miss their regular market nights where you can meet the maker and sample their wares.

Greensmith Grocers has always been about knowing where your food comes from – the farmers, the producers, the whole story behind the shelf. Now, it turns out you really can have both – slow food and fast delivery. Give it a go, I know what my next weeknight takeaway will be.
