Spotlight on Nambour

Gritty, cool and creative, Nambour is a town where you’ll find something surprising around every corner, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer.

There’s no place like Nambour. This gateway to the hinterland has a personality all of its own, with street art, quirky cafés and bars, vintage shopping, twilight markets, and a thriving arts and music scene. With the scenic train journey from Brisbane taking less than two hours, we recommend booking a nearby Airbnb to make a weekend of it – and with Wildlife HQ, Big Pineapple, Sunshine & Sons Distillery, Thrill Hill and many other attractions right on Nambour’s doorstep, one visit won’t be enough!

“You can start anything you like here – it feels like a blank canvas,” enthuses musician and artistic director Andrea Kirwin, who runs her Peace Run Records and Agency from a beautiful shop front on Queen Street. “There’s lots of people here collaborating to grow a foodie, fashion, arts and music scene.”

Longtime Nambour resident Nicole Hoffman, who recently opened Banksia Espresso in the centre of town agrees.

“I love that Nambour feels like our own little city,” she said. “I take a lot of inspiration from the arts scene in Melbourne, and Nambour feels similar; it has the same creative streak and edge.”

The Presynct keeps the good vibes flowing with live music five nights a week in an art deco/steampunk-inspired setting and is run by a mother-daughter duo passionate about rejuvenating Nambour’s nightlife; while Currie Street’s The Vogue Theatre has been tranformed from movie theatre to one of the coast’s hottest music venues.

Eclectic arts venues The Old Ambulance Station and Dance Art Etc include studio and performance spaces, and Peace Run Records hosts intimate events by night. Nearby you’ll find 2nd Space – an ArtsCoast-curated studio “for creatives to connect, collaborate and cause commotion”.

Club Hotel Namba has been revamped with a stylish rustic interior and an excellent menu showcasing local and seasonal flavours by Head Chef Wayd Bailey. Nambour has no shortage of places to get your caffeine fix: we love the indie vibes of Nambour Social, Small Change Espresso, Banksia Espresso, Mill Street Kitchen & Pantry and Muffin Whole. Beer enthusiasts might also like to mosey along to Morts Brewing Co. to sample their constantly changing selection of taps and experience the atmosphere of the Nambour Twilight Markets where the whole town comes together for Friday night knock-offs.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Nambour on the second Friday of each month, Nambour Twilight Markets light up Short Street and the Nambour Town Square comes to life to the beat of a live DJ on the main stage. Discover a world of culinary delights, captivating art and rhythmic beats!

Don’t miss the global flavours on offer at Namba Street Fair as part of The Curated Plate! Get ready to taste your way around the world with an epic street party on Mill Street. Mandy Day, from Sunshine Coast Council’s Place Activation Team, said of last year’s event: “It was so wonderful to see the people of Nambour come out in droves, the community absolutely loved it, and I hope we can see this delivered again!”

The Tramfest Bar, Club Hotel Namba and the Royal George Hotel will be the places to find a range of tasty beverages including some local brews on the day.

Mr Beesley’s Vintage Clothing on Howard Street is a treasure trove of retro delights and a key stop on Nambour’s famous Op Shop Hip Hop Trail. Music lovers should pop next door to Backbeat Records, which stocks LPs from all eras alongside a curated selection of books and clothing – while just along the road, Bad Habits Records and Collectables organises local gigs by touring musicians.

There’s so much more to discover in Nambour – head to an event or spend a weekend exploring to see for yourself!
