The Secret’s Out at Secrets on the Lake

It’s no secret that when you get away for a few nights, having every little detail taken care of makes your stay extra special. Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer discovers how the team at Secrets on the Lake go above (the treetops) and beyond…

If you love big gestures, you’ll love the big-hearted team behind stunning Montville rainforest retreat, Secrets on the Lake, nestled on the banks of Lake Baroon. This sensational spot offers luxury treehouse and cabin accommodation, and has been the home of many a proposal, wedding, baby shower, birthday, anniversary and other celebrations in the 30 years since its creation.

It comes from the top with founders and owners Aldy and George Johnston passionate about executing an experience you’ll remember forever. Struggling for ideas of how to surprise a loved one? You need Aldy on your side – a veritable fountain (or should that be lake?) of knowledge when it comes to creating magical moments. For an extra romantic proposal, she suggests organising a secret night or two away – with some sneaky help from George.

“Surprise your other half by booking lunch or high tea in our alfresco Dining on the Deck restaurant, then ask for a cabin tour where George will say, ‘I’m sorry! I‘m a bit flat strap, but I’m happy to give you the key!’” she explains. “You then take your companion to view the treehouse, which, unknown to them, is yours for the night.

“Imagine opening the hand-carved treehouse door only to find ‘Will You Marry Me’ in petals, or a ring box in the centre of a petal heart on the bed?!”

What a great secret! Or if you’re after something even more extravagant, Aldy’s ideas just keep flowing: “Couples have been delivered by helicopter to find the proposal in white rocks on the lawn and a romantic picnic awaiting them in The Snug Hut, which looks straight out over Lake Baroon’s rippling waters,” she says.

“Or alternatively, you can arrive on foot and we can create a Boho Picnic in The Snug Hut, The Lake House or on your private treehouse deck – we are happy to accommodate special requests wherever possible!”

Aldy knows that special events come in all shapes and sizes, and has made sure that Secrets on the Lake is also perfect for intimate gatherings: think bridal showers, small wedding receptions, anniversaries, baby showers, birthdays and more.

“The Hideaway is our stunning venue space for up to 20 guests – it overlooks the lake from its perch high in the rainforest, tucked privately away from the alfresco restaurant deck, and is just gorgeous!” she exclaims.

And larger functions are covered too, with The Gallery – which overlooks the rainforest – comfortably hosting 30 people, or Dining on the Deck catering for up to 70 for a super soirée!

Even if you’re not celebrating anything in particular, the Secrets team are determined to add the wow factor to your stay through a wide range of extras, which can include breakfast in the restaurant; freshly cooked croissants to your room; massages; picnics; free use of canoes and fishing gear; walker’s backpacks; transportation back from exploring the nearby Sunshine Coast Great Walk trails; and pretty much anything else you can imagine.

Fancy warming up your winter with a cosy Christmas in July celebration? Dining on the Deck is famous for its mid-year festive fabulousness, catering for tables for two to groups of 80 – showcasing some favourite house Christmas dishes that’ll have you feeling merry and bright. Running for the entire month of July, it’s a popular one, so bookings are essential to avoid disappointment!

You can also enjoy the restaurant at any time of year (even if you’re not staying at Secrets), with breakfast served from 8am to 10.15am Tuesday to Sunday and lunch from 11am to 2.30pm daily – offering unforgettable lake views alongside mouth-watering menus prepared by dedicated in-house chefs (with all sorts of dietary requirements catered for, including gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan).

“For those yet to experience the magic of Secrets, we’d love to make you welcome!” Aldy says. “Not only is our location truly one-of-a-kind, our team is skilled at making each and every guest feel special.”

Book in for your next celebration – or just because – the treetops are the limit!
