Purpose-built entertainment space Venue 114 is bringing the community together with live music, wearable art and kids’ shows this winter. Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer gets the ‘411’ on what’s happening at Venue 114…

Is there anything better than the magic of a live show? Whether it’s music, fashion, author events, kids’ shows or something else, there’s a special alchemy that happens between the performers and the audience that can’t be replicated online. Venue 114 is facilitating that magic this winter with a diverse range of events that offers something for everyone.

Centrally located next to Lake Kawana, this purpose-built space has been designed with the community in mind, featuring accessible toilets and designated wheelchair areas during seated theatre events, meaning every audience member can fully immerse themselves in the action.  The fun begins with Australian metalcore band Polaris playing on Thursday 4 July at 7pm, featuring special guests Ocean Grove and Bloom. This 18+ event is sure to electrify the stage and raise the roof with the Sydney-based five piece playing songs from their third album Fatalism, which was nominated for Best Heavy Album at the 2024 AIR awards. If you love to let loose to loud music, this is the show for you!

In a change of key, national treasure Maggie Beer will take to the stage on Friday 2 August from 7pm for a sold-out event as part of The Curated Plate, where she’ll be talking about her new book Maggie’s Recipes for Life with popular radio personality Caroline Hutchinson – it’s sure to be a feast of fun!

Fashion fans and creative cats, get ready: on Friday 9 August to Saturday 10 August, Venue 114 will come alive with colour and creativity when the Australian Wearable Art Festival 2024 begins!

Melding sculptural art with high-end fashion, this sartorial spectacular is the nation’s largest showcase of wearable art – described as “where Gaultier meets Picasso” – and is guaranteed to amaze and inspire. As well as experiencing the 27-metre long runway featuring 39 high-calibre national and international artists and designers, attendees are invited to fully immerse themselves in this wonderful world – enjoying welcome cocktails, locally sourced food and the opportunity to have their photo taken on the red carpet alongside the models rocking the amazing designs.

Head along to the Friday Night Show from 7pm, the Saturday Matinee Show from 12pm, or the Saturday Gala Show from 6.30pm, featuring an intimate gala atmosphere where the winners of the four categories – Trashion, Sustainable Nature, Avant Garde and Floriana – will be announced. Get your tickets now for one of the most exciting events on the Australian creative calendar or get ready to have serious fashion FOMO!

It’ll be a very twirly Tuesday when ARIA-award-winning children’s entertainer and ex-Wiggle Emma Memma comes to town on her big orange tour bus as part of her Boop and Twirl 2024 tour on Tuesday 17 September from 10am to 11am and 12pm to 1pm!

Spreading joy and sunshine wherever she goes, Emma will be playing a selection of old and new tunes that will get your little ones singing, dancing and signing, with help from Elvin Melvin and some other friends including BB Butterfly and Waffles the Wombat!  An interpreter will be present to translate the music and story into Auslan for the audience. With more exciting performances planned for later in the year, a good time is guaranteed at Venue 114!
