Waves of Healing at Thalassa Spa

Deb Caruso discovers an integrated massage delivering waves of healing with expert hands.

When Lisa Tristram opened the doors to wellness at Thalassa Spa Mooloolaba, the promise was simple: to offer an authentic sanctuary where people could reconnect with themselves and allow their bodies to truly heal, naturally and deeply, without fuss or force.

Lisa has developed treatments based on decades of experience and training and guided by the gentle rhythm of the ocean – a theme that threads through every detail of her unique approach From the beginning, Lisa’s vision was about more than beauty or relaxation.

“What I really want to create is a space where healing feels personalised and real; where the ocean teaches us how to move, breathe, and restore,” she says.

Oceans of Healing, Thalassa Spa’s signature treatment, delivers on this with a 90-minute massage that incorporates aromatherapy, crystal healing, sound therapy, and meditation into a carefully choreographed journey.

Tapping into Lisa’s training and experience in each modality, the therapies harmonise seamlessly, each element hand-picked for its healing resonance and subtle magic.

Sounds exactly what I need to support me through the pressures of deadlines, raising a teenager, running a business and all the joys of perimenopause! Lisa begins the session with a focus on the breath to calm and ground the nervous system before her soothing voice leads a guided meditation to help me let go and simply receive.

“The only thing you’re asked to do is be open. Your body is always doing the healing – it just needs space,” Lisa says.

As I have to return to the office and to deadlines, I set the intention of ‘relax and restore’ to allow me to let go but also recharge to focus for the day ahead. I am more than ready for the journey ahead as hot towels cleanse my feet and a gentle facial cleanse and massage with Waterlily’s Bio Cleansing Oil.

From there, Oceans of Healing unfolds layer by layer: every chakra, gland, organ and even emotion is honoured by its own essential oil, colour, and sound. Lisa gently guides me through the process explaining each therapy as it unfolds and resonates deep into my soul. Harmonic tuning forks are applied at varying frequencies, each chosen for clearing, relaxing, and setting intentions for healing.

“There’s really nothing for you to do but let yourself receive,” Lisa reminds me, her approach both nurturing and empowering.

The massage itself is an artful blend – elements of traditional aromatherapy massage, lymphatic drainage for lightness and clarity, Swedish strokes for muscle comfort, and energy and polarity balancing for true recalibration. Aromatherapy oils and healing sound therapies are chosen intuitively for their ancient wisdom and modern science.

Lisa’s philosophy is gentle and generous: nothing is pushed, nothing is forced; everything is offered in the spirit of balance, respecting the body’s wisdom. The ultimate aim, Lisa says, is to invite homeostasis (the self-regulating biological process that allows us to maintain a stable internal environment) without effort.

“Sometimes we pick oils intuitively – apothecary-style – allowing your body to guide the journey and deliver support to the area of the body that needs it most,” Lisa says.

Whether grounding frankincense, soothing lavender or uplifting peppermint; this isn’t just aromatherapy, but a dance of science and intuition, nurturing the nervous system so that ‘rest and restore’ becomes possible.

Crystal therapy is woven throughout: raw haematite for grounding, sunstone for creativity, citrine for energetic cleansing; and Lisa’s favourite, a selenite wand, ‘the angel crystal’, swept gracefully over reflex and acupuncture points, aligning energy with care.

Tibetan bowls and crystal singing bowls sound gently for heart-centred balance, their resonance echoing through body and mind. A rhythmic sequence that invites relaxation so deep that I lose sense of time altogether as Lisa’s expert hands gently coax the tension from my body and the chatter from my mind.

Oceans of Healing is more than a treatment – it’s an attentive embrace, activating touch, sound, and scent to invite the body to heal itself. In a world of constant motion, Thalassa Spa restores balance – honouring each guest’s journey, inviting rest, and reflecting the gentle generosity and power of the ocean.
