What’s Cooking at Greensmith Grocers
A beloved Birtinya grocer is expanding the family, and the newest member knows its way around a kitchen. Jodie Cameron investigates.
Something’s cooking outside Greensmith Grocers, and it isn’t just the pastry ovens warming up. Anyone who has walked past the organic grocer at Stockland Birtinya lately will have noticed something is brewing, and there’s a fair bit of local curiosity building behind it.
A purpose-built kiosk, fittingly named The Kitchen, is taking shape out front and for co-owners Jess Holdsworth, Uwe Wullfen and the Greensmith team, it’s been years in the making. The Kitchen began life as a modest pop-up stall trading outside the grocery store, a low-key way to test flavours and see what regulars kept coming back for before committing to anything permanent. That trial became the blueprint for the purpose-built kitchen now under construction.
Jess Holdsworth said the new menu is 100% nature-inspired and shaped by their experience running the pop-up.
“We wanted it to taste like it came out of someone’s home kitchen, not a commercial one – that’s been the goal from day one,” Jess says. “Running the pop-up taught us exactly what people wanted more of. This menu is really just us listening to our own customers.”
Jess has just returned from Biofach India 2026 where she represented Australia as an ambassador – a trip that’s clearly fed back into the menu.
“Seeing what’s happening in organics globally has only reinforced what we’re trying to do here – keep it real, keep it seasonal,” she says.
Expect Greensmith’s Love My Earth range to be sitting proudly alongside homemade extras like house-made organic sausage rolls with The Beach Farm wagyu beef and spelt pastry, and sourdough sandwiches filled with whatever’s in season. There will be house-made pickles, relishes and sauces too, because a good sandwich deserves the lot.
On the drinks side, three signature options are in the works, and their certified organic Bone Broth Hot Chocolate is one drink already getting attention, with a nod in the Australian Organic Industry Awards. It’s an unusual pairing, blending organic cacao with Australian grass-fed beef bone broth, carob, coconut milk and warming cinnamon and vanilla, all dairy-free, gluten-free and refined sugar-free.
The Spiced Cacao Hot Chocolate leans on Peruvian cacao warmed through with cinnamon, ginger and allspice, while the Spiced Turmeric Latte goes golden with a blend of turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and black pepper, finished with a touch of coconut milk for creaminess.
All three are dairy-free and refined sugar-free, and all three are made using Greensmith’s own Love My Earth range, straight off the shelves and into the cup. Cold treats are covered for the dairy-free lovers too, with milkshakes made using house-made syrups and Coyo ice-cream.
Sweet tooths haven’t been forgotten either. The raw treats cabinet will be stacked with slices that are dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free and refined sugar-free, without skimping on flavour – think caramel slice, lamington, ginger crunch and matcha mint.
“It’s our spin on your favourite treat,” Jess says. “We didn’t want anyone to feel like they were missing out because of a dietary need, and these treats are just as indulgent, minus the nasties and guilt.”
Planning a celebration for someone with dedicated dietaries? Gluten-free whole cakes can be pre-ordered online, and their much-loved Uber Eats bowls, including the popular Butter Chicken and Burrito Bowl, aren’t going anywhere either. They’ll simply be cooked up from the new kitchen once it’s running, keeping regulars fed without missing a beat.
Ahead of the official opening, Greensmith Grocers is throwing a Spring Market Night on Thursday 8 October from 4pm till 8pm and it’s shaping up to be the perfect sneak preview. Receive 10 per cent off storewide on the night, and grab an early dinner fresh from the new kitchen while you shop.
There’s also a merchandise range on the way, featuring the hand-drawn illustrations printed onto t-shirts as part of The Kitchen’s signature look.
“We’ve been dreaming about this kitchen for a long time, so to finally get to open the doors and share it with the people who’ve supported us the whole way, it’s surreal to see it actually happening,” says Jess.
For a team that has poured plenty of thought, taste tests and patience into getting this right, it shows. Keep an eye on their socials over the coming weeks, The Kitchen is coming, and the Spring Market Night on 8 October is your first taste of what’s ahead.
